Equal Parenting Group lays wreath to honour Canadian father killed in Afghanistan

A national parents’ organization laid a wreath at the National War memorial, in Ottawa, Canada, on November 11th 2011, Remembrance Day to commemorate Master Cpl. Byron Greff, and the other Canadian fathers who have died in Canada’s wars. The Canadian soldier, father of two, died in Afghanistan October 29th.
The wreath was inscribed “Fathers of Canada/Pères du Canada” and laid by the president of the Canadian Equal Parenting Council (CEPC). For the last 80 years, Canada’s official party of the Governor General has laid a wreath recognizing “Mothers of Canada” but fathers have never been officially recognized in the ceremony. It is estimated that there may have been up to 30,000 fathers in Canada’s war dead.
“Soldiers have two parents, a mother and a father,” says CEPC President Glenn Cheriton, “both should be recognized.” CEPC has written to the Legion and to the Minister of Veterans Affairs asking that Remembrance Day should recognize both parents.
The Remembrance Day ceremony is under the control of the Royal Canadian Legion which stated in a letter to CEPC that the Legion would only consider including or recognizing fathers if no mothers were available.
“There was a time when Remembrance Day only recognized men as veterans and war dead. This was changed to men and women and we approve of that change.” Says Mr. Cheriton. “The change to include fathers is long overdue. I have been campaigning for 14 years to make this change to treat Canada’s parents equally.”

  1. I think that this is an excellent initiative on the part of the CEPC and long overdue to have Fathers if this country to be recognized at this time.
