Montreal Gazette

A Canadian national parents’ organization is asking the Montreal Gazette to withdraw and article which describes fathers seeking equal parenting of their children after separation as “crackpots” , and stereotypes men as violent,
The article is on the Montreal Gazette Internet site at: http://www.montrealgazette.com/life/Fathers%2Bedge/6968504/story.html
Canadian Equal Parenting Council (CEPC) president Glenn Cheriton says “the article incites hatred, scorn and stereotyping against men and fathers, and it exploits a tragic suicide in an attempt to emotionally manipulate readers into opposing legitimate political and legal reforms, freedoms and rights for men because of their gender.”

Here is how the article misrepresents men, fathers, the issue of family courts, rights and the backgrounds of those cited:

In general, the article incites hatred and scorn and stereotyping against men and fathers, and it exploits a tragic suicide in an attempt to emotionally manipulate readers into opposing legitimate political and legal reforms, freedoms and rights of those targeted on the basis of their gender. The article attempts to obstruct the right of the targeted gender for fair family law trials. The article’s linking of fathers rights groups with homicide and filicide incites violence.

The article starts with a mis-definition of misandry (it is actually hatred or dislike of men or boys), and connects it with fathers’ rights, surely in itself an incitement. Poynter deliberately ignores two Montreal experts on misandry, Paul Nathanson and Katharine Young who published three books on misandry. Poynter’s aim thus is to dismiss and stereotype fathers as violent liars and unworthy of respect or rights.

The article fails to mention that Susan Boyd and Molly Dragiewicz are women’s studies and feminist ideologues with vested interests in gender apartheid and anti-male academics. Credentialed and published experts on the side of equality and fathers are ignored in Poynter’s article.

Poynter cites Statistics Canada data in concluding that mothers only get a minority of custody. However, Dr. Ed Kruk analyzes the same data and cites from Statistics Canada and Justice Canada the reality that fathers basically only get custody when it is given up by the mother, otherwise in contested cases she gets sole custody. Courts can label this “joint custody”, although for all practical purposes overwhelmingly, this is sole custody, says Kruk. Kruk’s extensive analysis, on the website of www.fira.ca and has been peer reviewed. Poynter portrays his selective and misleading citing of the data as indisputable fact — while ignoring peer reviewed analysis.

Here are some falsehoods in the article:

The article claims that FACT was founded by Vern Beck. FALSE.

The article claims that NADADS stands for “Not only dads are deadbeats”. False.

The article claims “Most people dismiss these {fathers’ rights} groups as a handful of crackpots,” FALSE. Public opinion surveys show 80% of the public supports family law reforms, that courts are biased against fathers, and equal parenting, the positions of the fathers rights groups.
